With encouragement from the governor's office, the Michigan DNR launched a Michigan's Top 11 Water Trails contest at the end of July, 2015. Starting with the list of water trails available on LIAA's Michigan Water Trails website, DNR asked the people of Michigan to vote early and vote often for their favorite trails.

The winner of the contest was a write-in: the Au Sable River in northern Michigan. Though not yet a managed water trail, the Au Sable was by far the favorite, with the Blueways of St. Clair (another LIAA-assisted project) coming in second.

Go to the recently-updated Michigan Water Trails website to explore some of the amazing paddling experiences Michigan has to offer, and contact LIAA if you know of a group or organization interested in promoting new water trails!
